BICYCOLOGY (LANCASTER)
Bicycology is a cyclists' collective that offers a range of activities to promote cycling and make the links with wider issues of environmental and social responsibility stating that ‘we use our passion for cycling to pursue our vision of a just and sustainable world through a combination of education, entertainment and creative direct action.’
Bicycology was formed by riders who wanted to build on their shared experience of the 2005 G8 Bike Ride and organise future events of a similar nature. Their website has a range of innovative tips and games and they have been involved in Cyclists Road shows, the Heathrow Climate Change camp and all sorts of other anarchically fun schemes!
Funding-by donations, fees and occasional grants.
Bike Buddies
Ever thought about cycling to work but lack confidence? Scared off by the steely-thighed cyclocrats in the bike shops? Need a little support in getting started? If so, then the Bike Buddy Scheme could be right up your alley! It's a free service for local residents to help new and returning cyclists to get to grips with cycling by helping them to find a suitable route from their home to work.
Bike Buddies are all experienced cyclists with a local good knowledge and able to map out the most suitable route for any required journey, whether it be to work, the supermarket, health centre or community hall.
By completing a simple questionnaire asking a few basic questions about your cycling abilities, you will be matched with a buddy who will contact you by phone or by email to discuss your requirements and arrange a convenient time and date to meet up for a dummy run of the journey.
Buddies will also be on hand to give information on the local cycle network, to give tips on riding safely in traffic, varying environments and weather conditions and offer advice on equipment, accessories and basic bike maintenance.
If you are interested in joining the scheme, simply contact the Cycling Demonstration Town Team on 01524 582086, or in writing to: Bike Buddy, Lancaster City Council, Palatine Hall, Dalton Square, Lancaster, LA1 1PW. The application form and questionnaire is also available on their website: www.celebratingcycling.org.

Pedal Power (Furniture Matters)

8 Ridge Square,
off Patterdale Road, Lancaster
LA1 3HR
Tel: 01524 65328.
Supplies very cheap / free (depending on your circumstances) recycled
bikes to your specifications. They also supply bits such as carrier
racks (handy for fixing a basket to), mudguards, locks, helmets etc.
They also do FREE repairs (you pay for any new parts needed) at their
cycle surgery on the the first Saturday of every month, from 10am-1pm
and give free tuition on basic repair and maintenance. Amazing.
Satori: I took my bike in for a repair - the woman there saw how I was sitting on it and suggested a number of things they could do to make it fit me better and more safely. When I came back for it they had spotted something else that could potentially have been quite dangerous and sorted it (one of the cables was positioned so that if it should snap it would lock my front wheel! So they fitted a little metal shield to keep it clear). Including the original repair the whole thing cost about £15. It's like a new bike. They are really something.
Lancaster Cycling Club
Rough
Stuff Fellowship (S. Lakes Group)
Founded in 1955 for cyclists who love by-ways and tracks. Does not stage
competitive events, but its members are dedicated to the enjoyment off-road
(Rough-Stuff) cycling on the quieter routes in England, Wales and Scotland.
The Rough-Stuff members frequently travel abroad.
SUSTRANS
Sick of sitting in traffic jams or in front of the telly? Then Sustrans can show you miles of safe, enjoyable cycle routes, no matter your fitness level, all around the local area and beyond. Pollution free, cost free and a far more enjoyable way of getting fit than throwing stuff at that Jeremy Clarkson on the telly. The website features rides to the Lake District and Blackpool amongst other shorter rides for the beginner-take advantage of the miles of cycle paths outside your door, explore your habitat and you won’t feel so guilty about having a pint in a newly discovered pub afterwards!
On a more serious note, according to Sustrans, the way we travel is a major user of one of the world's most valuable natural resources - oil. The burning of that oil for travel produces a lot of waste, including pollution and CO2, one of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change.
There are also the health aspects to consider. We are increasingly becoming more sedentary which is playing havoc with our health (and hips) Sustrans campaigns for safe cycle routes for adults and children of all abilities and works locally on 'Bike It' schemes with local schools creating safer cycle routes for children to school thus resulting in a cleaner environment and happier healthier children.
Sustrans welcomes volunteers - see the website for ways to get involved or contact your local Sustrans Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford on 01524 582654 or email: kathy.bashford@sustrans.org.uk
Funding - a registered charity, Sustrans relies on donations from the public, the lottery and national and local council amongst others
