This web site features news from the Lancaster Citizen, Lancaster's
free newspaper, jam-packed with letters and occasionally scooping the
Lancaster Guardian with news of the Council's latest mad plans
- though there's been little of that since reporter Paul Wilkinson left
to start up an alternative freemag - Rapscallion (see below).
In a slap in the face to the idea that Lancaster is some island separated
from the world, you may like to know that The Lancaster Citizen
is owned by Newsquest Media Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of US based
Gannett Inc. Gannett is the USA's largest newspaper group in terms of
circulation. The Company's 99 US daily newspapers have a combined daily
paid circulation of 7.8 million. They include USA
Today, the nation's largest selling daily newspaper, with a
circulation of approximately 2.3 million. Its web site averages 80 million
page impressions per day! A few more than this site then.

More regional daily newspaper with reports on goings on throughout the
area. Pretty Preston-focused.

The local paid-for paper is good for general news and community coverage
but as with many local papers the journalists have little time to engage
in any major investigative journalism -- and believe us, as with any
local town, we just know there's a lot that SHOULD be investigated.
There's concern that it currently doesn't seem to have a real local
'voice' in the same way as, say, The Morecambe Visitor.
To its credit, it has recently presented some good reports on some local
issues, such as its petition to save local libraries facing the chop
from the County Council - but it continues to come across as very pro-business
and pro-local bypass.
Unfortunately, this often leads to the sort of bland reporting many
local newspapers appear to have gotten down to a fine art. Its coverage
of the police raid on The Warehouse night club in 2001 left a nasty
taste in the mouth.
The Lancaster Guardian is owned by Edinburgh-based Johnston
Press.
Also publishes a weekly free paper, sometimes delivered door-to-door, called the Lancaster Reporter which usually carries lite extracts such as arts reviews from the previous week's Lancaster Guardian, plus advertising.
Morecambe Visitor Post: Lancaster & Morecambe Newspapers Ltd., Victoria Street,
Morecambe LA4 4AG Telephone (Newsdesk): 01524 834034 E-mail: visitor@lmnews.co.uk
Morecambe's newspaper is exactly what it says on the tin with a strong
editorial style that presents news about the people and issues facing
the town with real vigour. If you live in Morecambe it's an accurate reflection
of what's happening there.
The Visitor also features some interesting features on historic Morecambe
as well as a regular events guide. The Morecambe Visitor
is owned by Edinburgh-based Johnston Press.

SCAM
Currently offline.
New media project launched May 2004 - an independent news-sheet and
website designed "to publicise the stories too often ignored or
censored by the Student Union's newspaper Scan.
"We aim to cover anything and everything from what's going on in
your JCR to what's going on in Iraq, but we can't publish things we
don't hear about, so as well as reading Scam, we'd like to invite you
to contribute both articles and/or ideas for articles. On the website
you'll also find forums, which we hope will soon be filled with lively
debate on all sorts of issues - please do post!
Please spread the word to all your friends, clubs and societies - the
whole of the project is being financed out of our own pockets so we
can't afford masses of publicity. We aim to be a grass-roots community
site and we can't achieve that without the help and support of many
of our fellow students."
