us a review! Neil Foxlee (April 2008): Had lunch here recently and was very impressed with the quality of the food - so were lots of other people judging by how full it was. My lunch partner had fish pie and fresh fruit salad, while I had deep-fried whitebait with tartare sauce followed by apple crumble, and everything seemed to be freshly prepared (increasingly rare these days, with many places, even restaurants, resorting to ready meals and an oven or microwave - name the guilty parties, I say).
Also very impressive was the price: £5 a head, which was excellent value for money. Drinks seemed a little expensive, on the other hand, but you couldn't grumble with the food (they claim that all of their meat, fish and poultry has had a happy upbringing, by the way). The wines on display certainly seemed pricey, though.
The Borough has a pleasant large eating area through the bar and a sizeable open space at the back. It also offers an early-bird ('pre-theatre') menu from 5.30 to 6.30 at £5.95 for a main course with a glass of wine. I can't comment on the evening menu because I've since tried to access it on their website but the file didn't open (It does now but is very slow - ed). Definitely worth investigating.

However, my steak and ale pie had a top crust so hard that prolonged and frenzied stabbing with my knife made no impact whatsoever. A main course of fishcakes was advertised as being accompanied with new potatoes and Béarnaise sauce, but neither were forthcoming. The potatoes that came with the fish kebabs had obviously been reheated in the microwave. On the plus side, the waitress was friendly and helpful. But I’m still not going back!

us a review! Susanna McCafferty (November 2007): I decided to try LA One for a change... I wish I hadn't! I went in there
with a friend. She chose Spaghetti Carbonara, I fancied something a
bit healthier so opted for Crayfish salad. However, I was then told
there was no crayfish, but that I could have either prawn or tuna.. I
chose prawn, but alas the story changed and apparently there were no
longer prawns. The waitress gave me a few moments to look again at the
menu... I chose Nicoise salad... Again, I couldn't have that... something
to do with the salad order coming on a Monday?! So, in frustration, I
ordered the same as my friend, Spaghetti Carbonara. When it came,
although the sauce was tasty, the spaghetti was almost soggy it was so
overcooked. On top of which, in my friends garlic bread, she found a
piece of plastic. When we told the waitress about this, she went to
the kitchen, and came back and told us that it was in fact a bristle
from the brush that they use to spread on the garlic butter! Quite
frankly, we didn't care what it was, it shouldn't have been on the
food! To give them their due, they did give us one of the meals free,
but I will definitely NOT be returning here. If they don't have things
available on the menu, then don't have them advertised in large
letters on blackboards all around the place!

it very much. They've given it a complete makeover, and it's a really
interesting room - complete with lovely barrel vaulted ceiling. The bar
staff are helpful and outgoing, and on the night I went down they had the
Les Bull Band performing - part of their regular weekly Wednesday jazz
programme. The band were great, and the room is perfect for a jazz session
- there's plenty of room and seats (including comfy leather sofas), but it
feels intimate and friendly. I heartily recommend it (partly, but not only,
because I'm playing there in a fortnight!)

Three of us stopped in Lancaster on the way back to the Midlands for a meal for my mothers birthday. We chose three items from the blackboard - you would think that they might be the specials for the day! You would be mistaken. They were: a mushroom omelette, chicken with red pepper and tomato pasta and a mexican platter with sour cream. The pub did not have any mushrooms for the mushroom omelette, there was no sour cream and the beans were 95% chickpeas, and the pasta arrived without the chicken. After searching for the chicken for a while, my mother asked where the chicken was, and the waitress said that the chef was warming it up and it would be there in a while!!
There is no way that I would recommend this pub food to anyone. This was a birthday treat and to make matters worse my poor old mum had to pay for it. I have emailed the Litten tree site and have received no acknowledgement of my complaint. Linda Fletcher (23 August 2007): Update: Since writing we have had an apology from the Litten Tree and £25 of
vouchers. It still doesn't alter the fact that the meals were all very poor.

us a review! Victoria Carter (Feb 2008): After hearing some OK reports,
we ventured out last night to try one of Lancaster’s newest restaurants
for ourselves. The building is much improved on the old Farmers’ Arms
and we sat in the large, open dining area. Having been seated close to the
door, which resulted in a blast of cold air, every time someone came in, we
asked to be moved and our helpful waiter obliged.
The menu looked OK, nothing
to shout about but good, decent pub food and there was a veggie specials board
with an additional 3 choices. The olives and bread, which we had ordered to
nibble on before our meal, took a long time coming and actually arrived after
our starters. Not a good sign.
My mushrooms with Lancashire cheese were pretty
bland although the accompanying pickle was lovely. Others had the fishcake
and the veggie samosas (“OK”) but the black and white pudding was
a definite hit.
For mains, the vegetable linguine was disappointing, with an
abundance of cherry tomatoes and not much else! The steak and ale pie was another
hit and the fish and chips were fabulous and huge, with really tasty
mushy peas on the side. The chips are also great, home made and really
moreish.
Our waiter was extremely friendly and helpful, which lifted the
experience somewhat but overall, I would say the food (for the price) was just
average. The odd hit outweighed by the misses.

One of the oldest pubs in the county (13th century), recently refurbished
with a new non-smoking dining room, retains its old world charm, with
blackened oak beams and traditional features such as a gravity-fed cellar
and a ghost. 6 cask ales on tap and a range of wines and beverages. Roger from Lancaster (October 2007): I and my partner have eaten at the Three Mariners on several occasions. The service is very friendly, nothing too much trouble. Meals are freshly prepared which gives you time to sit back and have a drink in its beautiful atmosphere. Real home cooking, piping hot and large portions, a must place to visit, we have never had a bad meal yet. Compliments to the chef and all staff. Oh yes, it's also perfect for disabled people, everything on one level. We will be back. 11 out of 10. Beverly O'Shea (Feb 2007): The food here is fantastic. From game pie, to salmon, to quiche. The portions are large and the vegetables are perfectly cooked and crunchy. The soup can be eaten as a meal in itself and the sandwhiches are plentiful. the Three Mariners Pub in Lancaster. This is a lovely cafe doing a
variety of juices and milkshakes. I don't even like milkshakes and
I'm now a convert. The staff are very friendly and helpful and having
a 5 month old daughter we found the cafe extremely child friendly,
having toys, high chairs and good baby changing facilities. The atmosphere
is relaxed and we did not feel rushed at all. The cafe also has a variety
of sandwiches and cakes but best of all you can make your own milkshake
using cakes from the cafe or bringing in your own ingredients. I particularly

Val Currie (April 2007): Have just been to Lancaster, and had lunch at Lewis of Lancaster in New Street (roughly where Scott Richmond used to be) and had delicious home made soup and milky coffee. The soup was slightly pricy at £2.75 but when it arrived there was a large bowl full of Cream of Tomato soup with pieces of cherry tomato in it. Too much for me, I'm surprised to say! The room is pleasant and the tables well presented. The food is very good with a good range of specials using local produce.
The kitchen is visible from the tables which always is a good sign and the two girls running front of house were pleasant and efficient and made us feel at ease.

Beneath the restaurant is a very elegant art gallery. It has been extended
and a new food court has opened there in August 2004, serving Mediterranean
and Middle Eastern meals, snacks and drinks, with a huge selection of
coffees. You can also buy from a range of home-made pickles, jams and
Indian and Arabic sweets. Perksy writes (23/2/06): We decided to move from our
usual park bench and have our virtual-lancaster staff
meeting over lunch at the lovely Food Court, which is housed below the
Sultan restaurant in central Lancaster. Some of us had been before and
knew what to expect, but John F was pleasantly surprised: "This is a
bit of all right!". It's true, the place looks beautiful, it's smoke
free, the menu caters for everyone, and the internet facilities are
discreet and spot on.
Go and have a look yourself; this relatively undiscovered pleasure palace
is for everyone -- it's reasonably priced, the catering covers vegetarian,
vegan, carnivore, also halal. There is a variety of international cooking
styles, and diners are offered portions to suit their appetites.
The Food Court is comfortable; dotted around the art-filled dining hall
are squashy settees and places to linger. We couldn't linger as it was
back to work for the VL team -- but I felt like staying until the award
winning restaurant upstairs, the Sultan, was open. What a feast day

to drop in to the Sultan Food Court - delicious range of middle-eastern
delicacies, really relaxing surroundings and attractive art to look

What's It Like:Kate Bloomer (Feb 2007): regularly visit the Sunbury coffee house and every time I go I instantly
feel welcomed and at home.
The staff are always there to welcome you in with a genuine smile.
The last time I visited, I thoroughly enjoyed a steaming bowl of pea and ham
soup which was delicious and quite obviously home-made which is such a
refreshing change!
The coffee house also uses the coffee from Atkinsons just around the corner
in their caffetieres which always ensures you enjoy a cup of top quality,
freshly ground coffee every time.
I would thoroughly reccoment paying this lovely little cafe a visit!

Refurbished in early 2007. Food at the Whale Tail is always imaginative, delicious and vegetarian,
with a large selection of vegan meals to boot. There is also a daily
organic snack menu - with an organic main meal provided each Friday.

(several vegan), speciality coffees and herb teas as well as light and
