Carnforth

The Carnforth area, just North of Lancaster, was once a crossing point over the River Keer, hence the town's name. Carnforth Railway Station was used as the set for the classic 1945 Noel Coward film Brief Encounter starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. It is now being refurbished. The first stage of the refurbishment was completed in February 2002 and opened by Geraldine Smith, MP.

Heysham

Originally a fishing village, Heysham became a port in the 19th century. It is still used as a port today, with ferries operating to and from the Isle of Man and Ireland, and a busy cargo terminal. Also found close to the village is Heysham nuclear power station, which produces enough electricity for all of Lancashire and is set in a 25-acre nature reserve. Nuclear polluters have the best sense of irony we know.

Ingleton Waterfalls Walk
For the able-bodied and well-shod it's a must-see. Really lovely and it just goes on - you go up one series of falls to a little cafe stall and then over the hillside past a very textbook limestone outcrop (and sometimes an ice-cream van) and then back down a second series of falls. Beautiful. A series of falls and pools to swim in in the summer too and near the start a place where the agile can scramble behind the water curtain. Adults £1.50/1.00, kids 50p , cars £5.00 inc. occupants.

Kirkby Lonsdale

Famous for being the home of Devil's Bridge, where motor cycle enthusiasts rally of a Summer Sunday and on sunny days reckless folk entertain the picnicking tourists by jumping (DO NOT DIVE) from the parapet into the cold foaming torrent below (a good long way below and with rocky rocks on each side of a narrow channel). A potentially fatal or gravely injurious act that should not to be attempted at all. So don't go suing me if you mess it up, I've warned you. Also you'll spoil everyone's afternoon. Best also if you're childless, loveless and without dependents. And are wearing robust pants/T-shirt. Jumpers should be fully fit and able swimmers and take due caution, advice, consultation and careful observation of several other practitioners first and EXACTLY where and how they jump - and how they fare. The jumper should not leap wildly but should hold him / herself straight vertical, hold your nose, deep breath (ladies fold your arms under your breasts, guys - legs together) and present as little surface area to the water as possible cos it will smack it HARD. I've done it - thought I might want to practice for if I ever have to jump off a sinking ship......
